Overcome

Overcome is a site specific installation that tackles the impostor syndrome and internalized limitations. Fears are big, really big! They are built up in our minds until its all we can see towering over us. But with enough determination we can push past them and stand on the other side looking back.

To interact with the installation viewers were asked to take a piece of paper and write a self-limiting belief. They were instructed to then discard the piece of paper as they made their own way past the hand. At the end of the night, the discarded limitations were burned in a ceremonial fire.

Land based mandala

A mandala was constructed from sea glass and debris found in Tommy Thompson park which was created through the dumping of construction waste. A mandala is a geometric design made to represent the order and cyclical nature of life itself. Its design emerged organically in collaboration and dependent on the materials found. The mandala’s message was represented in it’s construction - debris that once formed the buildings of Toronto was then transformed into community art, to then only be transformed and destroyed again.

The mandala was left without instructions for passers by to find, interact with, and change. Initially, the spiral design and the towers were removed. The colorful sea glass was sorted by color on each individual white stone. The spikes were later added back encircling the mandala. The collection of colorful sea glass and rocks continued filling the entire mandala.  It was naturally destroyed in the winter of 2020.
